Learning Experiences
- Activity 1: Teacher shows to students a variety of pictures of living and non-living things, and introduces the words livind and non-living. Teacher points to a picture and says if the picture represents a living or non-living thing. Teacher models this activity a few times, and then asks for help from one of the students. Teacher repeats it a few times with the student, then asks the other students to participate whispering to their partners if the pictured pointed out is a living or non-living thing. (15 min)
- Activity 2: Check for learning identified above. Teacher provides 2 cards with the words living and non-living to the students. Teacher explains that they will have to stand up and raise the card that says “living thing” if the picture showed represents a living thing, or stay seated and raise the card that says “non-living” if the picture represents a non-living thing. - Activity 1: (Modeling Cycle)Teacher brings students outside, and models how they will have to look for living and non living things. She shows the poster with possible living and non-living things they may find outside. Teacher looks around, chooses a thing, then she draws it, and writes its name on the worksheet. She repeats that once or twice, to make sure students understand what they have to do. Teacher chooses a student to help her model again. Teacher and student work as partners. Student chooses a different thing, then he draws it, and writes its name on the worksheet. Teacher draws and writes what the student chose as well. Teacher chooses 2 different students to model the activity again. Students work as partners. Each of them chose a thing, draw it, and write it on the worksheet. They also have to draw and write the things their partners chose. (15 min)
- Activity 2: Students work as partners to find living and non-living things around the school, on their nature walk. (15 min)

Learning Experiences
-
- Activity 1: (Modeling Cycle) Teacher shows to students the list of living and non-living things she/he found outside. Teacher reads the list putting “I saw…” in front of each thing that is on the list. Then, teacher uses a puppet to model asking and answering questions. The puppet asks “what did you see outside?”, teacher responds using “I saw…” again. Repeat the modeling activity with the puppet two or three times. Now teacher invites a students to model it with her/him. Teacher asks the questions, and student replies using “I saw…”. After, the student asks the question, and teacher replies. Now teacher chooses 2 students to model the activity together. One of them asks the question, and the other answers it. Then, they swap their roles. (10 min)
- Activity 2: Inside/Outside Circle Activity. Organize students in two circles, one within the other, where students will be facing a partner. Each student will hold the list they have made in the nature walk. Teacher chooses one of the circles to start asking questions about the list of living and non-living things the student in front of them have made. Example: Students in the inner circle ask the students they are facing “What did you see?”, the students from the outside circle respond using “I saw…”. Then students from the outside circle ask the questions, and inner circle students reply. After both circles have asked and answered the questions, teacher chooses a circle to rotate, so students practice asking and answering questions with more than one partner. (Model the Circle activity) (20 min)

- Activity 1: (Modeling Cycle) Teacher shows to students a template worksheet where there are a list of pictures, and two columns labeled as Living Things and Non-Living Things. Teacher points to the pictures, and asks: Is this a living thing? Is this a non-living thing? Teacher takes the template and chooses 5 students to stand up and help modeling the activity. Teacher walks to each of the students and asks them to choose a picture by pointing at it. Teacher then asks if the picture that was pointed out is a living or non-living thing. Students answer using the sentence “It is a living thing” or “It is a non-living thing”. Teacher writes their anwers in the template worksheet. Now teacher asks for help of 6 students. One of the students is asking the question, and the other 5 respond, one at a time. (15 min)
- Activity 2: Line-up, changing partners activity. Teacher organizes the students in two parallel lines. The studends will be facing each other. Each student will ask, the student that they are facing, questions about the the pictures of living and non-living things. Teacher gives directions for one of the lines to ask the questions first, then gives direction for studens to switch roles. After both lines have asked, and answered questions, teacher moves a student from one of the lines, to the other end of the same line. This way all students will switch partners. Teacher sets a minute in a timer for students to ask the questions, answer it, and write it on their paper. Repeat it again until they all have completed the survey with 5 partners. (Practice the line-up activity a few times) (15 min)
