Standard 6: Instructional Planning
- The teacher plans instruction to support students in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, Utah Core Standards, instructional best practices, and the community context.
- Based on Utah Core Standards, a teacher should make teaching plans that show the teacher's knowledge of content and instructional practices with learners differences and higher order thinking practice to reach goals and objectives.
Goal:
- My lesson design focus more on students’ life and I will integrate four language skills into my lesson rather than to separate them into single part.
Reflection:
- I noticed that students are more likely to talk when the topic is what they are interested. When the topic relates to students’ life they will have more interests in it and also can enhance their learning . Such topic should create opportunities for students to express their ideas, absorb others’ experience, and then generate new ideas. As a language teacher, I always make a lesson plan with opportunities for students to talk and listen to topic related to students' interests. Also, while designing my lesson plan, I aim to integrate four language skills into my teaching rather than to separate them into single part. According to the Performance Guidelines: "The four skills are embedded in the Performance Guidelines. They have been repackaged into language modes, which place the primary emphasis on the purpose of communication and the context in which it happens, rather than on any one skill in isolation*."

Reflection:
- The key components of my sample lesson plan listed above are:
- Standards, Objectives, Purpose.
- Anticipatory Set (engagement).
- Strategies, Skills, Learning Activities.
- Differentiation RTI/Enrichment.
- Vocabulary.
- Resources (Technology, Other).
- Assessment.
- I think teaching vocabulary should be embedded in sentences (students learn vocabulary from context). My lesson goal is that students can use new vocabulary to make their own sentences. I noticed that I sometimes have spent too much time on the lecture. The lesson should be student centered not teacher centered. I need to use more activities and different centers for my future lesson plans. Chinese dual immersion class is the best class I ever have because almost every students are willing to answer and ask questions. They are more likely to take (share) than older students in High school (East High) and college (University of Utah) I have taught. The positive learning environment influences all students in the class. All students are willing to try their best to make comments and questions which is the ideal environment for a language learning classroom. I also found that if students understand what they are doing and interest in the materials/activities, they will be more engaging in the class. As the saying goes “you may take a horse to the water, but you cannot make it drink." Thus, in my classroom, it is important for me as a teacher to design several activities and opportunities for students to talk and learn. However, it happens sometime you find that students don't like the lesson plan you prepared. Thus, it is also important to always prepare a backup plan and be more flexible.
- I also updated my lesson log daily for students and non-Chinese speaking parents to know what is going every day on class website. I made several tutorial videos for students and parents. The videos are "1. Website overview & tutorial, 2. How to use Google translate for Chinese translation, 3. How to use Arch Chinese Dictionary, 4. How to use: YCT vocabulary, 5. How to use MDBG Chinese-English Translator, and 6. How to use "zhong wen" on-line text book". I updated class website's resource weekly. I want our students and parents can easily/quickly to find previously materials, so I put all resource links in one page. The resources are "Listening games, Matching games, Sentence restructure games, Songs & videos, Students' videos, YCT & Mandarin Matrix-Reading test, and Students' pictures". I spend all weekend and about 30 minutes daily to post lesson goals and update daily lesson log. According to the parent survey and some parents mentioned that their students use the class website regularly. The website has regular around 100 unique visits and 500 page views per week. The website's visit data shows that our parents and students use class website at home constantly. I will continue to keep update daily lesson for my students and parents.
