Standard 4: Content Knowledge
- The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline.
- Teachers’ content knowledge is crucially important to the improvement of teaching and learning. Teachers’ content knowledge makes a difference in their instructional practice and their students’ achievement. A good teacher needs to understand the subjects they teach.
Goal:
- Apply Chinese literacy, math, and science/social studies' standards into daily lesson. Update content objectives, and language objectives weekly on class website.
Reflection:
- There is No English allowed in the dual immersion classroom. I post modify Chinese version of standards in classroom and also I update a English version of Chinese literacy, math, and science/social studies' standards on the class website for parents to know "what students will learn in Chinese class" every week. Base on core standards and lesson plans provide by Chinese dual immersion team, I modify every lesson and apply them to daily lesson. On the class website I list content objectives and language objectives to ensure my daily lesson always consistent with content objectives and language objectives. After daily teaching I write log in "what students have done in Chinese class" every school day. Keep this daily practice as a routine is useful and effective for me as I can always look back to see what I've done and how and if it worked.

Reflection:
- I strongly believe that teachers’ content knowledge is crucially important to the improvement of teaching and learning. I am a native Chinese speaker which gives me a powerful admission ticket to be a Chinese teacher. Moreover, my graduate study, the Master of Arts in World Languages program, provides me pedagogical theories and content knowledge that I can apply pedagogical theories into my lesson plan and daily practice. My high ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview – OPI score (Superior) and Praxis score in Mandarin Chinese are other indicator that shows my qualification and dedication of content knowledge. With holding of strong content knowledge, I will continue learning the content of the discipline and to engaging my students.
- The class website makes a huge difference. Our parents do not speak Chinese so the daily update information on the website reduce anxiety for our parents. Parents can find learning resource to help their students' homework. When students have any question about Chinese learning, our parents can check the website to find information or guidance to help their student at home. I even make some topic related games (update weekly) and put them on the class website to attract students to use the resource at home which help students become a self-learner. According to parents' feedback heard from the parent teacher conference and from the reply of weekly email, parents and students love our class website as parents found it informative and students found it interesting playing games. I will keep making learning become a fun thing for students.
